"The post office of Uruguay presented this Wednesday a commemorative postage stamp dedicated to former president Jose 'Pepe' Mujica, one year after his passing, in an event in Montevideo attended by Lucía Topolansky, widow of the former Uruguayan leader, and the president of the Republic, Yamandu Orsi. Footage shows the unveiling of the postage stamp, which includes an image of Mujica during his presidential inauguration in 2010, accompanied by the phrase 'In my garden I do not cultivate hatred'. During the event, the president of the Uruguayan Post, Gabriel Bonfrisco, highlighted the symbolic value of postage stamps as permanent witnesses of collective memory. "Philately (Study of postage stamps) has a particularity that no other communication medium has, permanence. […] Pepe deserves that place not because he was president, but because he was one of the few to come to power with the conviction that power was not to be used for personal gain," expressed Bonfrisco. The head of the postal service also emphasised the teachings of the former Uruguayan president and stated that although he is not physically present, his legacy will remain. "Today we are stopping time for a moment, because there are people who do not leave completely […] Pepe was many things […] but above all, he was profoundly human," added Bonfrisco. The tribute was also attended by the Minister of Industry, Energy, and Mining of Uruguay, Fernanda Cardona, who highlighted the prior work to achieve the issuance and the human significance of the recognition. "We have been working on this tribute for more than two months […] he (Jose Mujica) always found the moment of reflection to speak from the human perspective," noted the legislator. Mujica passed away on May 13, 2025, at the age of 89, one year after being diagnosed with oesophageal cancer."
