Illegal foreign workers nabbed in BI casino crackdown

MANILA, Philippines — Five foreigners were arrested in a surprise Bureau of Immigration (BI) crackdown inside a casino, as authorities intensified the government's  nationwide campaign against illegal foreign workers, visa violators, and undocumented aliens operating in the country. Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado on Thursday said the  operation was carried out following the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to strengthen the government’s campaign against undocumented foreigners and unauthorized employment activities in the country. BI intelligence officers swooped down on a casino in the Newport area in Pasay City  after receiving reports that several foreigners were working there in violation of Philippine immigration laws. During the operation, authorities discovered multiple foreigners allegedly engaged in activities inconsistent with the conditions of their visas and permits. Among those arrested was a 51-year-old Chinese who was found to have overstayed in the country while allegedly working without the proper employment visa. Also taken into custody were another Chinese, a Malaysian, a Taiwanese and a Korean for possible immigration violations ranging from unauthorized employment to working for companies other than their declared visa sponsors.
