New Delhi : In a major step towards strengthening joint military operations and enhancing coordination between India’s Armed Forces, the Indian Army and the Indian Navy signed a Memorandum of Association on Affiliation on Wednesday in New Delhi. The agreement was signed by Lt Gen VPS Kaushik, Adjutant General of the Indian Army, and Vice Admiral Gurcharan Singh, Chief of Personnel of the Indian Navy. The ceremony was attended by Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, Vice Chief of the Army Staff, and Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Vice Chief of the Naval Staff. The Memorandum aims to institutionalise inter-Service cooperation by promoting greater understanding, operational coordination and professional camaraderie between formations, regiments, institutions, establishments and ships of both Services. Officials stated that in today’s rapidly evolving security environment, India’s national security responsibilities extend beyond protecting territorial boundaries to also safeguarding maritime and economic interests. While the Indian Navy plays a crucial role in securing sea lanes and ensuring uninterrupted trade, the Indian Army continues to remain central to maintaining stability and security across the Indian subcontinent. The agreement comes at a time when future warfare increasingly demands faster decision-making, cross-domain coordination and interoperable capabilities among the Services. Defence officials highlighted that seamless synergy between the Armed Forces has become essential for conducting integrated and multi-domain operations effectively. The importance of such integration was recently demonstrated during Operation SINDOOR, where coordinated efforts by the Army, Navy and Air Force reportedly contributed significantly to operational success. According to the Ministry of Defence, the Memorandum will also serve as a framework for future inter-Service affiliations and lay down broad guidelines for collaborative activities. These affiliations are expected to create structured opportunities for joint training, professional exchanges, operational familiarisation and better understanding of each Service’s capabilities and operational ethos. The signing of the Memorandum is being seen as another significant milestone in India’s ongoing push towards greater jointness, integration and synergy among the Armed Forces in line with the requirements of future-ready defence operations.
