Our only lifeline - Starving families crowd Gaza charity kitchens as humanitarian crisis continues

"As humanitarian conditions in Gaza continue to deteriorate, displaced families are being forced to queue for hours at charity kitchens to secure their only meal of the day. Footage filmed on Wednesday in the Ansar district, west of Gaza City, shows men, women, and children jostling in exhausted crowds, holding empty plastic containers as they wait for aid amidst soaring market prices and a critical shortage of basic supplies. "We rely on the charity kitchen here given the difficult circumstances we are experiencing during the war as vegetables are still very expensive, and prices in general are beyond our reach. That is why we come to the kitchen to get food," explained displaced person Umm Mohammad Shamali. The lack of consistent supplies remains a primary concern for those in the camps. “The aid, honestly, is very poor. During this period, we are also suffering from its unavailability. We hope, God willing, that more aid will reach us in the coming period," added Al-Shghnubi. "There is no source of income at all. We can barely provide food and drink, and even water is hard to come by. When water trucks arrive, we have to crowd and wait in long lines to get it." The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that regional escalations have further crippled the aid response, with major crossings, including Rafah, remaining closed. According to OCHA, fuel rationing is now so severe that it is hampering the operation of bakeries, hospitals, and desalination plants. In some sectors, residents are surviving on just two litres of drinking water per day. Health officials are also sounding the alarm over a burgeoning malnutrition crisis. The Gaza Centre for Human Rights warned that over 71,000 children under the age of five are at risk of severe malnutrition throughout 2026 due to the restricted flow of food and healthcare essentials. The conflict began on 7th October 2023, following Hamas-led attacks that killed 1,139 people, primarily civilians, and saw over 200 others taken hostage. The subsequent Israeli military campaign has, to date, resulted in the deaths of more than 72,000 Palestinians. While the humanitarian situation remains dire, diplomatic efforts are ongoing. In January, US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff announced the second phase of the "Trump 20-point plan" to end the conflict. The proposal focuses on transitioning the current ceasefire into a permanent disarmament, installing a technocratic administration to govern the strip, and launching a large-scale reconstruction project."
