Staged? PNP does not dismiss possibility in Senate shooting

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday said they are looking at all angles in the Senate shooting including the possibility that it could have been staged. “Hindi po natin sinasabi na staged o hindi ‘yung nasabi pong pangyayari ito po ay makukumpleto natin within the day,” PBGen. Randulf T. Tuaño, Public Information chief said in a press briefing at Camp Crame. (We are not dismissing whether the incident was staged or not but the investigation will be complete within the day.) A number of personalities expressed suspicions that the entire chaos could have been fabricated including former Sen. Antonio Trillanes who said the shootout was an orchestrated plan of long-time allies Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano and Dela Rosa, according to his sources. Even National Bureau of Investigation Director Melvin Matibag said operatives of the agency have honestly thought of the possibility since the senator went into a six-month disappearance prior to the incident. As a balance however, the fact that someone was arrested and is facing serious cases gave credence to the truthfulness of the shootout, Tuaño said. Earlier, the PNP disclosed that a suspect caught with live ammunition was arrested last night and is facing no less than four cases. The severity of the cases he is facing gives credence to the belief that the attack was real. “We have already learned of that theory but we can see that there was someone who was arrested and is facing charges, so that theory is unlikely,” PBGen. Randulf T. Tuaño, “Like I said, the suspect is facing at least four cases and this is not a joke because it will affect his life and his family,” Tuaño said. An irate Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano on Thursday shot down claims that the shooting was staged. “Sorry ah, but I don’t think there’s any question, the Senate was under attack. All of you, your lives were in danger last night. I know it’s your job to ask questions, but you will tell me, kapag may nag paputok ng warning shot, hindi under attack ‘yun?” Cayetano said in a Senate briefing. Tuaño said the PNP will await the final result of the investigation to rule out the root cause of the shootout.
