'We don't give a damn about war!' - Trade unions hold massive protest in Brussels against austerity measures and military spending

"Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Brussels on Tuesday to denounce the government's reforms, including spending on defence, pensions, indexation and wages. Footage shows people throwing shoes at cardboard cutouts of officials of the Belgian government. Members of various trade unions can be seen holding placards and banners with slogans among others reading: 'Arizona hates us, together for its downfall', '3.6 billion € for Chassis aircraft, 86.7 million € less for schools in 2026 - this is not the kind of society we want' and 'A decent pension is not a LUX'. "They spend billions on weaponry to actually go and kill people who are also workers like us," said Gaelle Demez, a member of the CSC Public Services organisation. "We don't give a damn about their war. We really just want our children to have a future." Protesters gathered outside the headquarters of the MR party and chanted slogans. They accused the government of favouring the rich and divesting from social services to increase defence spending. "Today, we have a government that wants to balance budgets, mainly by attacking pensioners, the sick, women, and the middle class," another protester said. The rally marked the 10th major day of action organised by Belgium's main trade unions since the ‘Arizona’ coalition federal government, led by Prime Minister Bart De Wever, took office in February 2025."
