President Alexander Stubb and Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė on Thursday met in Vilnius and discussed various issues including strengthening bilateral relations, European security and Ukraine. “The state visit to Lithuania continued with a working lunch with Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė. We discussed opportunities to further strengthen relations between Finland and Lithuania,” Stubb wrote in a post on his social media platform X after a working lunch on the first day of his two-day visit to Lithuania. The President said that they also discussed the security situation in Europe and support for Ukraine. “Pleased to meet Finnish President Alexander Stubb in Vilnius. Our views and priorities align on many issues: Baltic Sea security, resilience to hybrid threats, the importance of the transatlantic relationship, protection of the EUs eastern borders, support for Ukraine,” Ruginienė wrote in a post on her X after the meeting. “It is in our deepest interest to work as one within a strong NATO, the EU, and NB8 (Nordic-Baltic 8),” the Lithuanian Premier added. Earlier on the day, Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda and his spouse Diana Nausėdienė received Stubb and First Lady Suzanne Innes-Stubb with a ceremonial welcome in Vilnius. Nausėda and his spouse also hosted a state banquet in the evening. On Friday, the day will begin with a business forum, where President Stubb and President Nausėda will deliver the opening addresses. The forum will focus on the defence industry, defence and dual-use technologies, and resilience. The presidents will hold official discussions covering bilateral relations and defence cooperation, European security and defence capabilities, regional security, as well as current global issues. The presidents will then visit the Padvarionys Frontier Station, where they will be introduced to border control activities and the border guard school. In the afternoon, the programme will continue with a visit to a football school that provides sports opportunities for underprivileged and immigrant-background children. The state visit will conclude with a reception hosted by Finlands Ambassador to Vilnius. President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda and his spouse paid a working visit to Finland in 2025. The previous President of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, last paid a working visit to Lithuania in 2022.
