'It has to do with the lack of employment' - The number of people searching for food and experiencing homelessness in Argentina is increasing due to inflation

"The number of people in community dining rooms in Argentina is increasing as a result of the rise in annual inflation, which stands at 32.6 per cent. In the images, lines of people seeking food assistance can be seen in different parts of the country. According to the latest official data from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC), consumer prices recorded a monthly increase of 3.4 per cent in March, the highest level in a year. Although annual inflation showed a slight deceleration (32.6 per cent) compared to February. In response, working families, retirees, and both formal and informal employees turn to food assistance centres to afford their meals. "A lot of people come to get food. (...) Many people who have their own apartment (...) that one might say 'they don't need it', but they really do need it. (...) and they are in need just like you," commented David, an unemployed resident. On the streets of the Argentine capital, it is increasingly common to see homeless people sleeping under improvised roofs and public sidewalks, while facing low temperatures and limited access to basic services. "What's happening is that rents are becoming increasingly high. (...) It has to do with the lack of employment or the low income generated by work (...) Families that set up something like an apartment, but on the street," said Nicolas Caropresi, national coordinator of the movement of the excluded. Although President Javier Milei's government defends its economic adjustment policy as part of a plan to stabilise the economy, for different social sectors, the impact is immediate and falls mainly on low-income households. Meanwhile, community dining rooms continue to function as a safety net for thousands of Argentines trying to get through the crisis, even if it's just with a plate of food."
