LAHORE: The Punjab government has directed the provincial energy department and energy companies to submit proposals for affordable and commercially viable energy projects across the province. The directive was issued during a high-level meeting chaired by Punjab Energy Minister Faisal Ayub Khokhar on Thursday. Representatives of various energy companies, senior officials of the provincial energy department, and sector experts attended the session to discuss Punjab’s future energy strategy, reduction in electricity generation costs, sustainability of the power sector, and the provision of affordable and reliable electricity to consumers. During the meeting, the company representatives briefed the minister on proposed future projects, alternative energy sources, the adoption of modern technologies, and plans to enhance production capacity. The participants stressed the need for effective and modern reforms in the energy sector to maximize public relief and ensure long-term stability in power generation. Addressing the meeting, the provincial minister said the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is to provide uninterrupted, high-quality, and low-cost electricity to the people of the province. He added that the Punjab government is taking all possible measures to modernize the energy sector, strengthen infrastructure, and reduce electricity production costs. The minister was of the view that the use of domestic gas in energy projects could prove more beneficial than Regasified Liquid Natural Gas (RLNG), potentially lowering production expenses while ensuring more efficient utilization of national resources. The minister also called for the introduction of China’s advanced “Digital Twin” technology in energy projects, saying that the system could significantly improve the efficiency, monitoring, and production capacity of power plants. He said the adoption of modern technologies would help deliver better outcomes in the energy sector. He further stated that reducing electricity generation costs would directly benefit consumers while also supporting industrial and commercial activity in the province. The minister directed all relevant departments and institutions to present practical recommendations on new energy projects and reform proposals at the earliest to ensure meaningful progress in the sector. The meeting was also attended by Additional Energy Secretary Majid Iqbal, along with officials from various companies and relevant departments. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
