ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that the government could not pass any constitutional amendment or the upcoming federal budget-FY27 without the support of the PPP, emphasizing that his party would continue to back the government on all matters related to national interest and stability. Speaking to journalists at the National Assembly on Thursday after chairing a meeting of the PPP parliamentary party, Bilawal Bhutto said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari remain in contact with him, but the government had not yet approached the PPP regarding any new constitutional amendment. He said the party had played a key role in the 26th and 27th constitutional amendments and ensured the protection of provincial rights, while also increasing Balochistan’s representation in the Senate. He said the public is facing severe difficulties due to inflation and rising economic pressures, adding that the government would have to provide relief in the upcoming budget after consulting all stakeholders and provinces. He said the PPP had consistently raised public issues at both federal and provincial levels and welcomed the government’s decision to provide relief measures, including support for motorcycle users. Bilawal Bhutto said the PPP had helped millions of farmers through the Benazir Mazdoor Card and reiterated that the party supports the government on constitutional and national matters. Referring to tensions with India and regional developments, he said he had defended Pakistan’s position on international media during the conflict with India and later accepted the prime minister’s request to lead a peace committee after the war. Commenting on accountability laws, he said the PPP has historically maintained thatthe National Accountability Bureau (NAB) should be abolished. However, considering the government’s constraints, the party supported recent amendments but could review its decisions if commitments made by the government were not fulfilled. He warned that economic challenges are increasing and said the upcoming budget would be difficult. He said a senior PPP committee comprising Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Saleem Mandviwalla, Sherry Rehman, and Naveed Qamar would present budget proposals to the government. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also said Pakistan’s foreign policy is moving in the right direction and serving national interests. He expressed hope that efforts by the prime minister and the field marshal to reduce Iran-US tensions would succeed and condemned attacks on Iran and missile strikes on the UAE. He said Pakistan and the PPP have longstanding ties with Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Iran, while relations with Saudi Arabia are entering a new phase, strengthened by defence cooperation.
