Luzon, Visayas grids again under yellow, red alerts

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued yellow and red alerts for the Luzon and Visayas grids as repair and restoration efforts continue for affected power infrastructure. The transmission firm said that on May 15, the Luzon grid will be on yellow alert between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and also between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. Meanwhile, the grid will be on red alert between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. NGCP said that peak demand will reach 13,881 megawatts (MW), but available supply will be 13,508 MW. The transmission firm said that 30 plants remain on forced outage in Luzon while 14 others are running on lower capacities. It said that the Tayabas-Ilijan 500 kilovolt (kV) and Dasmarinas-Ilijan 500 kV transmission lines were restored on May 13 and will soon be resynchronized back to the grid. Meanwhile, Visayas will be on yellow between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., and also between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. The grid will be on red alert between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. as peak demand is expected to reach 2,661 MW, but available capacity supply will be only at 2,441 MW. The NGCP said that 21 plants in Visayas are on forced outage, while 11 are running on lower capacities. A red alert is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand. A yellow alert means the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement, but does not lead to power interruptions.
