"The Solomon Islands' National Parliament elected opposition leader Matthew Wale as Prime Minister on Friday, after a confidence vote removed Jeremiah Manele on May 7. Footage from Parliament in Honiara shows officials arriving for the vote announcement before Wale delivered an emotional post-victory speech. "Total number of valid votes given to each candidate: Honourable Peter Shanel Agovaka: 22; Honourable Matthew Cooper Wale: 26. Therefore, I declare that Honourable Matthew Cooper Wale is the Prime Minister of Solomon Islands after having been duly elected as such by the Members of Parliament," declared Governor-General David Tiva Kapu. Wale conveyed his gratitude to fellow MPs for his election and pledged changes ahead for the country amid global instability. "We take government at a difficult time, given what is happening throughout the world. We are not immune from the impacts of these geopolitical events <...> I call on all Solomon Islanders to summon the strength and courage to stand united in the face of these difficulties," Wale remarked. "I appeal to the youth of our country. Be ambitious for yourselves and be part of the growth we want to see in the Solomon Islands. To all Christians who have daily prayed for our beloved Solomon Islands, your prayers have not been in vain," he added. The vote followed a defection of government officials in March, which forced Manele to call a confidence vote. In the vote, Manele lost with 22 votes against 26, with two abstentions. After the vote, Wale was appointed, and Manele was removed from office. Situated 1,600 km northeast of Australia, the Solomon Islands has assumed strategic importance amid closer China ties following a 2022 security agreement with Beijing. Wale had earlier reportedly called for full publication of the pact and questioned China's motives for engagement with Honiara. "
