Colombo : Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) Sagar arrived at Colombo Harbour on Friday as part of its operational deployment in the Indian Ocean Region, further strengthening maritime ties between India and Sri Lanka. The ship, carrying personnel from 16 Friendly Foreign Countries (FFC), was escorted into harbour by a Sri Lanka Navy vessel on arrival. The three-day port call is aimed at enhancing maritime cooperation and reinforcing regional security collaboration between the Indian Navy and the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN). The visit reflects the growing partnership between the two neighbouring nations in ensuring peace and stability across the Indian Ocean Region. During the stay, the Commanding Officer of IOS Sagar is scheduled to meet senior officials of the Sri Lanka Navy, including the Commander Western Naval Area and the Flag Officer Commanding Naval Fleet. The officer will also call on the High Commissioner of India in Colombo. As part of the engagements, the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Navy is expected to visit the ship and interact with the multinational crew onboard. Several professional and cultural programmes have also been planned during the visit. The crew members of IOS Sagar will participate in media interactions to highlight the objectives of the IOS SAGAR 2026 deployment. Friendly sports matches, including volleyball and basketball, will also be organised between Indian Navy and Sri Lanka Navy personnel to promote camaraderie and mutual understanding. The ship will remain open to visitors during its stay at Colombo Harbour. Personnel from the Sri Lanka Navy, school students and members of the Indian diaspora are expected to visit the vessel. Apart from official activities, the multinational crew will undertake cultural and professional tours to Colombo Port, Galle, Kandy and Pinnawala to deepen people-to-people connections and cultural exchange between the two countries. IOS Sagar is scheduled to depart Colombo on May 18 and will conduct a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with the Sri Lanka Navy before continuing its deployment. The visit of IOS Sagar highlights Indias Neighbourhood First policy and underlines its commitment towards collective maritime security, regional cooperation and stability in the Indian Ocean Region.
