Minor phreatic eruption hits Taal Volcano early Saturday

LUCENA CITY — Taal Volcano in Batangas province recorded a minor phreatic, or steam-driven, eruption early Saturday, May 16, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). In its morning bulletin, Phivolcs said the eruption — the volcano’s second this month — occurred at the main crater at 12:16 a.m., although the agency did not specify how long the activity lasted. The explosion, locally known as “pusngat,” produced a 300-meter plume captured by the thermal camera monitoring system at the main crater.
