'Their homes are being stolen' - Demonstrators march through Rotterdam on 78th Nakba anniversary demanding Palestinians' right to return amid war

"Pro-Palestine organisations marched through the streets of Rotterdam on Friday to mark the anniversary of the Nakba, saying that 78 years on, Palestinians are still deprived of their right of return. Footage shows demonstrators holding large cardboard keys in solidarity with Palestinians who were forced to leave their lands by Israeli forces in 1948. "Their homes are being stolen all the time. Gaza is being bombed. The West Bank is being raided," said Halimeh, a representative of a pro-Palestine student movement. Patricia, a demonstrator, explained that the day serves as a reminder that more than 750,000 Palestinians were expelled from their homes in 1948, but continue to hold onto the keys to their properties as a symbol of their right to return. Every year on May 15, Palestinians around the world commemorate the Nakba, or 'catastrophe' in Arabic, marking the mass displacement of Palestinians from their homes and villages in 1948 following the establishment of the State of Israel – a date Israel observes as its Independence Day. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, more than 72,700 people have been killed in Israel's large-scale military campaign in Gaza that started with the 2023 Hamas-led attacks. On Friday, Israel struck a residential building in the Rimal neighbourhood of Gaza City, causing a massive fire, killing at least seven people and wounding dozens."
