'It came rushing like a river' – Pipe collapse causes massive flooding in the south of Mexico City, leaving at least 25 homes affected

"A massive water leak was reported on Friday in the town of San Francisco Tlalnepantla, located in Xochimilco in Mexico City, affecting 25 houses, according to the latest reports. Images released show Civil Protection personnel, Firefighters, and the National Guard working in the area, removing water and debris with shovels and support equipment. According to reports, the incident originated after the collapse of a large-diameter pipe, which caused the rapid spread of large volumes of water into nearby streets and lands. The Secretariat of Comprehensive Water Management (SEGIAGUA) reported that the leak began when a steel plate "dislocated," leading to the emergency. Blanca Isabel, a local resident, recounted that the incident began at 7:30 local time and expressed that as a result, she lost two cars and a motorcycle. "We hope that they really support us and help us recover everything we lost," she stated. Meanwhile, Elvira Sánchez García, an affected elderly woman, shared how she experienced the event. "It burst around five in the morning and the water came here around seven. It came like a river [the water leak flooded the streets], a huge river. And that river entered my house and other houses," she recounted. The "water outbreak" initially measured about two meters long, and due to operational maneuvers, the flow was diverted to other areas, which has allowed its reduction. Authorities expect to complete rehabilitation work in less than 24 hours. According to engineer José María Esparza, spokesperson for SEGIAGUA, the affected population has the support of Mexico City's insurance. He also noted that authorities are conducting house-to-house visits to inform that the capital's government will be responsible for the damages caused. The leak in Xochimilco occurred less than a week after another similar emergency was reported in the Iztapalapa borough, once again highlighting these types of incidents in the capital."
