'Two great superpowers coming together' - Sanchez welcomes Trump-Xi talks, urges cooperation and diplomacy

"Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez welcomed the recent meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping in China, describing diplomacy and dialogue between both sides as 'good news' during a speech in Seville on Friday. "It is good news that the two great superpowers of this world are coming together, talking, trying to reach agreements. I think this is good for stability and peace in the world," Sanchez stated. "We already have quite enough wars. We will have to reach agreements, which is to use diplomacy, ultimately, politics," he stressed. He criticised what he sees as inconsistency from the political right, arguing they object to his government seeking international engagement while not criticising similar outreach by others. "I don't see the right criticising Trump for visiting Beijing in this way. It seems that if I go to Beijing seeking investments and to strengthen ties with one of the great superpowers, [...] that is bad for the right," Sanchez argued. Prime Minister Sanchez then defended Spanish footballer Lamine Yamal, saying he has been unfairly criticised for showing support for Palestine, and urging political solidarity with him. "I am waiting for the right, the PP, and Vox to show their solidarity and support for a footballer, for Lamine Yamal, who just for waving the flag of Palestine, has been criticised by the Netanyahu government," Sanchez said. "We give all our support to that athlete and to the Palestinian people and express our complete rejection of the violation of human rights and international law that Netanyahu is perpetrating," he continued. This comes after FC Barcelona winger, 18-year-old Lamine Yamal, drew attention during the club's La Liga title parade after he was seen carrying a Palestinian flag. Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir criticised Yamal, saying he should 'understand' that raising the Palestinian flag symbolises 'terrorism', adding that "whoever identifies with this flag should not be surprised by the hatred of Israelis towards him.""
