"Tensions erupted in Jerusalem on Saturday as law enforcement removed dozens of protesters who were demanding new elections to oust Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. Footage shows police carrying demonstrators by force out of the streets and erecting barriers to block their movement. Protesters pressed on, marching through the city centre with signs and placards condemning Netanyahu and his allies, chanting and holding Israeli flags. "Israel prides itself as being a Jewish democracy, but we see that that's not true. We see that Israel is actually an ethnocratic state that uses apartheid. And we're here to say 'no,' we're here to rally against that," one protester said. "Our hope is that the elections will come soon and that there will be a democratic alternative, because we've been living under a fascist government for far, far, far too long. And after almost 80 years, it's time to have democracy," he continued. Another urged Democrats to 'move a different agenda forward' and take on Netanyahu's coalition. "I hope that the damage done up to now by Bibi's coalition, [which] will be the Ben-Gvir and the Smotrich's, will actually be undone by this government coming in," she underlined. The protest comes as Israel advances plans to annex parts of the West Bank, asserting sovereignty and security rights over the disputed territory. On Monday, the European Union approved sanctions targeting several Israeli settler groups and conservative figures accused of stoking 'violence' against Palestinians in the West Bank. Earlier, US President Donald Trump opposed the annexation plans, saying he 'will not allow this to happen'. Israel's 2026 legislative election is set for October 27, when voters will choose 120 members of the 26th Knesset. Reports indicated that political strains could trigger an early vote as soon as September, if the coalition fragments."
