Strait to nowhere - Ships and tankers stranded at sea as Hormuz restrictions continue

"Footage released by Iranian state TV on Sunday shows vessels and tankers stranded at sea amid ongoing Iranian restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz. The time, location and content of the footage published by Iranian media could not be independently verified. Iran's UN ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, said on Saturday that Tehran was ready to help restore stability, energy security and normal traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, but only if military escalation stops and the maritime blockade is lifted. "We declare very clearly that the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz and its global economic consequences are solely the responsibility of the initiators of the war against Iran," Iravani said. Earlier in the week, US President Donald Trump described the ceasefire with Iran as being on 'massive life support' and dismissed Iran's proposal as 'garbage,' 'stupid' and 'unacceptable.' Iran's Foreign Ministry called the proposal 'generous' and said it called for an end to the war, a halt to 'maritime piracy,' and the release of Iranian assets frozen under US pressure. The United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran on February 28. Iran subsequently confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and appointed his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as his successor. Tehran responded by launching missile strikes targeting Israel and a number of countries in the region. On April 8, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week truce with Iran to allow for negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement to end the crisis, before later extending it 'until Tehran submits its proposals', without specifying a timeframe. Islamabad hosted a round of negotiations between the US and Iran on April 11, mediated by Pakistan, but these failed to yield any results; nor has the second round scheduled between the two countries taken place to date, whilst diplomatic efforts in this regard continue. Since then, traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been restricted, whilst the US Navy has maintained its blockade of Iranian ports, despite the ceasefire agreement."
