Red Shirley Poppies in Full Bloom at Tokyo’s Showa Kinen Park

People walk through a field of early summer flowers at Showa Kinen Park, which straddles the cities of Tachikawa and Akishima in western Tokyo. Around 1.8 million red Shirley poppies — also known as hinageshi or gubijinso in Japan — and white kasumiso baby’s breath are in full bloom over about 1 hectare on Flower Hill. According to the park, the poppies bloomed about a week earlier than usual due to a string of warm days in April. They will be at their peak until around Sunday.
