Women’s group condemns professor’s transphobic remarks towards Awra Briguela

MANILA, Philippines — A women's rights group condemned the alleged transphobic remarks received by actress Awra Briguela from her Universidad de Manila professor. This comes after Briguela’s professor left a transphobic remark on her beach photos she posted. In a statement Tuesday, women’s group Gabriela said the incident shows the need to pass the Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Expression, and Sex Characters (SOGIESC) Equality bill, stressing that no person deserves to be discriminated based on their gender identity. “It is alarming that, until now, there are still teachers spreading transphobia and discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community. It is never acceptable to make a person a subject of ridicule or humiliation because of their gender identity or expression,” Gabriela Women's Party Representative Sarah Elago said in Filipino.
