"A trial freight train service departed from the port in the Syrian province of Latakia, en route to the Adra Free Zone in the Damascus countryside on Tuesday, after a 14-year hiatus according to local media. Footage shows the train travelling along the tracks, as well as staff inspecting railway operations at the port. "Today we were able to run the first trial journey to transport containers from the port of Latakia to the city of Adra Al-Omalia, the Free Zone and the dry ports there," said Osama Haddad, Director General of the Syrian Railways General Establishment under the transitional government. He noted that the resumption of services will "help to ease the pressure on roads and ports, reduce environmental emissions, and cut down on accidents and other issues." Haddad explained that the train's resumption of service will speed up transit operations and accelerate 'Syria's return to its role as a regional hub', noting that they had faced 'many difficulties in rehabilitating the lines'. Local media reported that the train arrived at Adra station on Tuesday morning. The General Authority for Ports and Customs of the transitional government announced the signing of an agreement to operate two dry ports in the Adra Free Zone and the Aleppo Free Zone, in partnership with CMA – CGM International, with the aim of "managing and operating the dry ports in accordance with the highest international standards, thereby enhancing the efficiency of logistics services and improving the readiness of infrastructure related to trade and transport."
