'Yankee, go home!' - MEPs debate US troop cuts in Europe, slam Trump over 'illegal' Iran war

"European lawmakers slammed US President Donald Trump and the EU's leadership as they reacted to the planned cut of US troops on the continent, in Strasbourg on Tuesday. "If the US wants to reduce its troop presence in Europe, then the answer should actually be, 'Yes, please. Yes, Yankee, go home,'" said MEP Ozlem Demirel during a plenary session in Strasbourg. She added that the European bases have been 'crucial' for the US, especially during its war with Iran. "Let us say it, what we see is that it is gangsters who are leaving," MEP Marc Botenga added. He said that Trump had been pressuring Europe to join what he described as an 'illegal' war against Iran or face a US troop withdrawal. "Basically, he was saying it is the Europeans who must kill the schoolgirls in Iran. Well, fortunately, we said no to that. Good riddance," he added. Another MEP, Jarslava Pokorna Jermanova, criticised the EU leadership for favouring the US and NATO over its partners: "Why we have found ourselves in this situation. It is a direct consequence of Brussels' deep diplomatic ineptitude." "Donald Trump is not reliable. You can flatter him, you can appease him, and he will still hit you with tariffs, annexation threats, or troop drawdowns," MEP Hannah Neumann said. The comments were made as EU lawmakers debated on the body's approach in the Middle East conflict. The session was also attended by the EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas. It comes as Trump has threatened to withdraw 5,000 soldiers from Germany over Chancellor Friedrich Merz's criticism of the Iran war."
