'They never abandoned the country' - Tehran hosts memorial ceremony for fmr FMs Kamal Kharrazi and Hossein Amir-Abdollahian

"Iranian officials in Tehran on Wednesday marked the 40th day since the assassination of former Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi, as well as the second anniversary of the death of former Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. Footage shows journalists, former ministers, and senior officials attending the commemorative event. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that after 40 days of war, many people around the world had come to realise they did not truly understand the resilience of the Iranian people and their armed forces. He stressed that Iranian officials had remained at their posts throughout the conflict and had neither resigned nor sought asylum abroad. "We do not see our mission as separate from the missions of others [the armed forces]. Wherever we need to fight, we will fight. Wherever we need to negotiate, we will negotiate. This is the mission entrusted to us by the system, and we remain committed to this path," said Araghchi. Former Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi died on Thursday, April 9, from injuries sustained in joint US-Israeli airstrikes targeting Iran earlier that month. Kharrazi, 81, held several senior diplomatic posts, including Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations and foreign minister between 1997 and 2005 during the presidency of Mohammad Khatami. Former Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian was killed alongside Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and several senior officials in a helicopter crash on May 19, 2024. The United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran on February 28. On April 8, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a two-week truce with Iran to allow for negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement to end the crisis, extending it later until Tehran submits its proposals, without specifying a timeframe. On April 11, Islamabad hosted the first round of negotiation talks between the United States and Iran without reaching an agreement. The planned second round has yet to take place. Since then, Iran has imposed restrictions on traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, while the US Navy has maintained its blockade on Iranian ports despite the ceasefire."
