"A massive mobilization of resident physicians, nurses, and healthcare workers took place in Buenos Aires on Wednesday. The protesters marched from the Ministry of Health to Plaza de Mayo to demand salary increases and a larger budget for public hospitals. During the protest, demonstrators denounced that the situation “has worsened recently” due to the cuts and austerity measures implemented by the government of Javier Milei. They stated that low salaries, staff shortages, and a lack of supplies are increasingly affecting the operation of hospitals and emergency rooms. Wearing white coats, carrying banners, and chanting slogans, the workers demanded an urgent response from national authorities and warned that many professionals are leaving the public system due to job insecurity and excessive workloads. “The healthcare situation in our beloved country is dramatic due to the successive cuts the national government is making to each of the provinces. There has been a tremendous increase in preventable deaths in every district, and that is directly related to the austerity measures implemented by Milei’s national government,” said pediatrician Javier Maroni. The workers also emphasized the impact that the lack of resources has on patients with serious illnesses and prolonged treatments. “Milei wants us dead. Because if you deny a cancer patient medical attention, or deny them cancer medication, or delay it, cancer doesn't wait. Cancer kills. Consequently, he is killing us,” stated Joana Triqueiro, mother of a child hospitalized in a pediatric hospital. Resident physicians also denounced that salaries are no longer enough to cover basic expenses and that many professionals must find other jobs to survive. The mobilization culminated in Plaza de Mayo with a rally in defense of public health, where patients' families and social organizations also participated. The protesters asserted that they will continue with further actions if they do not receive concrete answers to their demands."
