"The government of Peru has declared a 90-day health emergency in Lima, Callao, and 11 other regions due to the risk of measles spreading, following an outbreak that was detected in the southern Puno region. Nearly 300 cases of the disease have been reported there. Footage filmed on Wednesday shows the vaccination process at the Manuel Nunez Butron Regional Hospital in Puno, as part of the measures promoted by the Ministry of Health to strengthen containment efforts and prevent the further spread of the virus. The Ministry of Health also deployed door-to-door vaccination brigades, school-based campaigns, and reinforced care in health centres and posts supplied with vaccines. "The only way to stop this outbreak is by vaccinating. That is why we urge the population to open their doors to health personnel and get vaccinated," said Cesar Vladimir Munayco Escate, director general of the National Center for Epidemiology, Prevention and Disease Control (CDC Peru) of the Ministry of Health of Peru (MINSA). The official also noted that the authorities are immunising people up to 59 years old. As part of the measures taken, in-person classes have also been suspended in schools in the San Roman province that do not have 90 per cent of students vaccinated. Health authorities also recommended the use of face masks, frequent handwashing, and visiting health facilities if symptoms related to the disease appear. "The risks are very high because this disease is a virus that infects 12 to 18 people," warned Melchora Tito Vilca, head of immunisations at the Puno Health Center, who also alerted people about possible complications such as pneumonia, otitis and conjunctivitis. Experts have warned that there is still a segment of the population that refuses vaccination due to misinformation, which could lead to the spread of the virus, even among young people and adults. Health officials are reportedly meeting to discuss new strategies for increasing vaccination acceptance, as the initial epidemiological measures have not been successful in containing the spread of measles."
