Athens Contemporary Art Museum Revives Acropolis-View Rooftop Cinema

The National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) will officially reopen its acclaimed rooftop open-air cinema, CineFIX, on May 28, launching a summer-long program of experimental films, documentaries, and audiovisual installations set against the backdrop of the Acropolis. The weekly outdoor screenings recall the industrial heritage of the museum’s venue, which is housed inside the historic, repurposed Fix brewery building. EMST organizers announced that the 2026 season will debut with the landmark 1963 French documentary Le joli mai by directors Chris Marker and Pierre Lhomme. The film offers an intimate, polyphonic portrait of Paris in May 1962, captured immediately after the conclusion of the Algerian War. Continuing its focus on socially conscious programming, the museum will dedicate its June 5 session to Athens Pride 2026. The evening features an academic panel discussing the historical trajectory of the LGBTQ+ community since the era of pioneer sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld. The seminar features contributions from Aegean University Professor Costas Yannakopoulos and political scientist Grigoris Vallianatos, followed by a curated retrospective of queer cinematic history. Museum directors stated that the unique open-air initiative cements EMST's ongoing campaign to transition from a static exhibition space into a vibrant, community-oriented cultural sanctuary for domestic and international travelers alike.
