Marcos vows stricter monitoring after Navotas landfill fire

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday said the government would strictly monitor landfill areas to prevent another fire similar to the one that erupted at the Navotas Sanitary Landfill. In his speech during the launch of the "Bawat Bayan Makikinabang" initiative in Obando, Bulacan, Marcos raised concern over the harmful effects of smoke produced by burned garbage, particularly plastic wastes. "That smoke is really dangerous because it’s not like ordinary smoke coming from burning wood or similar materials. There are all sorts of things underneath it," Marcos said. "From now on, we really have to carefully monitor situations like this. There is not much we can do because, as you know, during the dry season, it gets extremely hot. Apparently, these fires can ignite on their own," he added.
