'It deserves opportunities and freedom' - Kallas and Velasco discuss support for Cuba during bilateral meeting at the VIII Mexico-EU Summit

"The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, held a meeting this Thursday with the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Velasco, in the country's capital, within the framework of the VIII Mexico-EU Summit. The European Commission's vice president also assured that during the bilateral meeting, "urgent issues" such as the situation in Cuba were addressed. "Cuba's economic crisis is really reaching a breaking point. The Cuban people deserve opportunities and freedom, not more control and isolation," she declared during a press conference. However, she also accused the island's government of carrying out "mismanagement and political repression." For his part, the Mexican foreign minister reiterated that Mexico's stance is the self-determination of peoples and the peaceful resolution of international conflicts and defended support for the Caribbean nation. "Today we have agreed on the importance of maintaining humanitarian cooperation that allows the Cuban people to have access to basic services, which of course allows them to have a dignified life as all people deserve," Velasco stated. During the meeting, the robustness of the economic relationship between both partners was also highlighted, revealing that more than 10,000 European companies have already invested in Mexican territory. This Friday, May 22, the VIII Mexico-European Union Summit will take place at the National Palace, marking the first bilateral meeting between both partners in 11 years and the historic moment for the signing of the Modernized Global Agreement that updates the cooperation framework in place for 25 years."
