ISLAMABAD: Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir landed in Tehran on Friday as part of Pakistan’s ongoing regional mediation efforts aimed at fostering dialogue between the United States and Iran, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). Field Marshal Munir, who has been actively engaged in diplomatic initiatives to encourage a permanent resolution to the Middle East conflict, was received upon arrival by Iran’s Interior Minister, Eskandar Momeni. According to sources, the Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Lt Gen Asim Malik, is also accompanying Field Marshal Munir, while Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has been in Tehran for the past three days. Official sources confirmed that the visit is part of a broader Pakistani diplomatic strategy to engage with senior Iranian leadership on matters of regional security, peace initiatives, and ongoing Iran-US engagement. Security analysts indicated that the discussions are expected to focus on strengthening regional stability, supporting mediation channels, and exploring avenues for sustained dialogue between the parties. “Gen Munir’s visit underlines Pakistan’s commitment to facilitating dialogue and reducing tensions in the region,” an ISPR statement said, emphasising the need for constructive engagement amid a complex and evolving geopolitical landscape. Diplomatic and security sources noted that the visit coincides with heightened regional tensions and persistent behind-the-scenes diplomacy. Multiple regional stakeholders remain actively engaged in backchannel communications, aiming to prevent escalation and promote a negotiated settlement between Washington and Tehran. During his visit, Field Marshal Munir is scheduled to hold high-level meetings with senior officials in Tehran, including discussions on confidence-building measures, the promotion of regional security frameworks, and potential avenues for collaboration in multilateral initiatives. Observers suggest that Pakistan’s mediation role reflects its longstanding policy of advocating dialogue as a tool for conflict resolution and stability in the region. The visit comes at a critical juncture as international attention increasingly focuses on the Middle East, with global powers closely monitoring developments in Iran-US relations. Analysts contend that Islamabad’s engagement could contribute to creating a platform for renewed negotiations and de-escalation, though the challenges remain significant given the complex geopolitical environment. Field Marshal Munir’s trip follows a series of diplomatic engagements by Pakistani officials aimed at consolidating regional peace efforts and positioning Pakistan as a constructive interlocutor in international security matters. Officials emphasised that Islamabad remains committed to supporting initiatives that ensure peace, stability, and cooperation in the region. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
