"Military vehicles were seen near civilian homes in Sidon Al-Golan village, in the Quneitra countryside of southern Syria, on Saturday. Footage filmed in the area shows several vehicles parked and others moving through the village, while UN vehicles are also seen stationed nearby. Five Israeli military vehicles set up a checkpoint at the Sidon village junction and searched passers-by before withdrawing, reported the local media, adding that the military presence disrupted movement in the area and left some routes difficult to pass. The IDF has not commented on the incident at the time of publication. In December 2024, the current transitional government seized power in Damascus. Ahmed Al Sharaa was later appointed interim president, pledging an inclusive government. Since then, Israel significantly expanded its military presence in southern Syria, moving forces into the demilitarised buffer zone. Israeli air and sea strikes targeted Syrian strategic weapon stockpiles to prevent falling into 'hostile hands'. Several abuses against civilians from ethnic minorities across the country, including Druze, Alawites and Christians, were reported, sparking calls for secession in Suwayda and for decentralisation in the Syrian Coast. Syrian Kurds were officially granted new cultural and civic rights following weeks-long clashes."
