LAHORE: Judicial Activism Penal (JAP) has approached the Lahore High Court against increase in agricultural tax in Punjab. The JAP and a MPA Ijaz Shafi in a joint petition pleaded that the government unlawfully revised agricultural income tax rates by bypassing the constitutional role of the assembly. The petitioner argued that under the Punjab Agricultural Income Tax Act, any alteration in tax rates is required to be placed before the provincial assembly. The petitioner alleged that this mandatory statutory requirement was not followed by the respondent government. The petitioner pleaded that the agricultural community has been subjected to unconstitutional taxation measures, adversely affecting farmers’ livelihoods and economic stability protected under the Constitution. The petitioner asked the court to set aside impugned notifications for being illegal and unconstitutional. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
