'Even the water is hot' - Uttar Pradesh locals battle record 48-degree heatwave as hospitals overwhelmed with heatstroke cases

"The Indian state of Uttar Pradesh continues to experience a severe heatwave, leading to a surge in reported cases of heatstroke, severe dehydration, and high fevers. Footage from Saturday shows the Banda District Hospital beds filled with heatstroke patients as temperatures reached 48.2 degrees, making it the hottest location in India. "In our OPD (Outpatient Department), there are around 1,100 patients, while nearly 100 patients are being admitted through the emergency ward. Most of them are suffering from fever and dizziness," said Dr Vineet Sachan. He explained, "Treatment is provided according to the patient's condition. If a patient is unable to walk properly and appears weak, they are immediately admitted, put on IV fluids, and given appropriate treatment. If the patient is able to walk properly and the condition is not very serious, we prescribe oral medication and ORS (oral rehydration solution), and advise them to avoid going out in the sun." Residents attribute the heatwave to elevated pollution levels, with some suggesting that 'deforestation' is contributing towards a reduced supply of oxygen. "The trees are being cut down. There is extensive farming activity in Bundelkhand, and because of this, the temperature is rising. This situation is mainly being seen in Bundelkhand, while conditions are normal in other places," a local elaborated. He shared, "I had just gone near the hospital to drink water, but even the water was hot. Everything is heating up. It is extremely hot here." Outside the hospital, villagers are seen covering their faces to beat the heat, while some sip water and other beverages near crowded refreshment spots to stay hydrated during the intense weather. The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for multiple districts in Uttar Pradesh due to an ongoing heatwave expected to last for the next 10 days. Temperatures have soared, with Prayagraj district reaching 46 degrees and Jhansi and Orai at 45 degrees. The high night temperatures and hot winds have prompted authorities to implement measures to end commercial activity early by 10:00 AM and to close schools in emergencies."
