'We are not seeking nuclear weapons' - Iran's Pezeshkian reaffirms 'no compromise' will be made amid ongoing US talks

"Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian affirmed that his country will not 'compromise' on its honour during the ongoing negotiations to end tensions with the United States, whilst stating that Tehran has no desire to acquire nuclear weapons. "Let me assure the world that we are not seeking nuclear weapons, nor are we seeking unrest in the region," said Pezeshkian in Tehran, on Sunday. "We and our negotiating team will by no means compromise the country's honour and pride in the negotiations," he added. The Iranian President accused Israel of 'disturbing the region', noting that Tel Aviv is actively pursuing the 'Greater Israel' plan and is "conspiring to keep war, unrest and discord alive." President Trump stated on Sunday that negotiations are proceeding in an 'orderly and constructive manner', and that the US naval blockade on the Strait of Hormuz will remain in 'full force and effect' until an agreement is signed between the two sides. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baqaei announced that Tehran had entered the 'final stages' of preparing a memorandum of understanding setting out its position on the peace process with Washington. However, Baqaei clarified that the memorandum of understanding "will not address the nuclear issue in detail at this stage," an issue which Washington insists on considering the main red line in the negotiations. A ceasefire had been announced on April 8, with proposals exchanged between the two sides through Pakistani mediation; however, the Strait of Hormuz crisis continued, as Iran closed the strait to countries it described as 'unfriendly', whilst the US imposed a blockade on Iranian ports. The US and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran on February 28. Subsequently, Iran announced the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and the appointment of his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as his successor. Tehran responded by launching missile strikes targeting Israel and a number of countries in the region."
