'He told me the strike was coming... then the line went dead' - Parents of LPR college student recall devastating UAV attack

"College students in Starobelsk and their parents recalled the events of the deadly drone strike in the Russian-controlled Lugansk People's Republic (LPR) on Saturday. Larisa Viter, a mother of one of the students, shared that her son had messaged her at 22:30 local time (20:30 GMT) on Friday to notify her that shelling had begun, remaining in contact with him until 04:00 local time (02:00 GMT) the next day. "I was absolutely terrified for the child. We were talking. Then he said, 'The strike’s coming right now.' And the line went dead. You can imagine how I felt," she said. "I couldn’t get through to him again. Was he alive or not? Had that strike hit their dormitory? It was very frightening. After waiting until 4 o'clock in the morning, my husband and I went there and saw it all with our own eyes. It's all very tragic, sad, and on a massive scale," she continued. The mother of another student, Marina Antonova, said that her daughter called her at 01:45 am local time (23:45 GMT) to say the college had been destroyed. "My husband and I couldn’t get back to sleep. We decided to pick her up. She told us not to come because it wasn't safe yet - the drones were still flying," she recounted. "We set off at three in the morning. We drove about 12 kilometers. She called and said, 'Come back. It's not safe'. We turned around and went back to Novoaydar, where we live. At 04:00 am, once the curfew had ended, we decided to go. It didn't matter if it was scary or if drones were flying, we had to go to our child," she added. A student of the college claimed that the strikes began around 22:00 local time (20:00 GMT), saying that at the time of the impact, students were already preparing to sleep in the corridor, hoping to shield themselves from shrapnel. "We'd only just started carrying the mattress out when we heard a drone flying towards the college. At first, it was just flying around the building. We managed to get down to the ground floor; everyone rushed straight down to the ground floor," she said. "We heard an explosion, and I saw flashes. And the blast wave hit us. Bricks started falling down on us, and there was dust everywhere. Everyone was shouting. I understood nothing. Some boys came in and started shouting: 'Follow us!" she continued. After the attack, the students managed to escape the building, explaining that they hid under trees and benches to avoid further strikes. Residents of nearby apartment buildings came to their aid after the dormitory caught fire. LPR's Head Leonid Pasechnik stated that Ukrainian forces attacked the college building and dormitory on Friday. Russian President Vladimir Putin described the attack as a 'terrorist act', emphasising that it could not have been accidental. "There were three waves of 16 UAVs targeting the same location. <...> In such cases, it is not enough to issue a statement from the Foreign Ministry. Thus, the Russian Defence Ministry has been instructed to submit its proposals," he said.
