TANDAG CITY — A strong earthquake followed by a series of aftershocks struck off the coast near Bayabas, Surigao del Sur, shortly before 1 a.m. on Monday, May 25, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). Initial data released by Phivolcs showed that a magnitude 5.6 earthquake occurred at 12:48 a.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers, with the epicenter located about 27 km northeast of Bayabas.
