Speed, strength and steppe! - Kok-boru qualifier for World Nomad Games kicks off in Kyrgyzstan's Talas

"A traditional 'kok-boru' competition - the fierce horseback sport considered Kyrgyzstan's national game - took place in Talas on Saturday as part of the qualifying rounds for the 6th World Nomad Games. Footage shows riders galloping across the field as they wrestle for control of a goat carcass and attempt to hurl it into their opponents's goal, followed by the winners' award ceremony. Organisers praised the high level of horsemanship on display, while spectators cheered on the teams. Keeping with tradition, the riders were presented with cash prizes for every goal scored. The event also served as a training ground for referees from Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Head coach of the Kyrgyzstan Kok-Boru Federation, Erzhigit Usarov, said that the event allowed referees to exchange experience and agree on a set of standard refereeing rules. The 6th World Nomad Games will take place in Kyrgyzstan from August 31 to September 6. The opening and closing ceremonies will be held in Bishkek, whilst the main competitions will take place in the Issyk-Kul region. More than 3,000 horseriders from over 50 countries are expected to participate. The programme will include competitions in kok-boru, national wrestling, archery, falconry and other traditional sports of nomadic peoples."
