'UNSC reform to correct historical injustices' - Burundi's Ndayishimiye on 'inclusive governance' as Congo scraps visas for Africans

"African leaders gathered in Brazzaville on Monday for the African Development Bank Annual Meeting 2026, for discussions on economics, governance and regional challenges. Addressing the annual meeting, Chairperson of the African Union and the President of Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye, reiterated the demand for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council, calling for "more inclusive" international institutions. “Africa is not asking for charity. Africa is asking for equity, justice, and a legitimate position in the decision-making mechanisms that shape the future of the world,” Ndayishimiye added. Earlier this month, French President Emmanuel Macron, during his visit to the continent, also backed Africa's demand for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council. The Republic of Congo on Monday announced visa-free entry for all African countries starting January 1, 2027, joining other countries on the continent in lifting restrictions in a bid to promote stronger regional integration. "As of 1 January 2027, all African countries will be visa-free, will no longer need a visa to come to Congo," President Denis Sasso Nguesso said at the African Development Bank Annual Meetings 2026 in Brazzaville. He added that the announcement demonstrated the country's commitment to fulfilling the vision of Africa's founding fathers of free movement of people and goods on the continent and the integration of states, ultimately leading to the use of a single African passport. Ghana, Togo, and Burundi are among the few African countries that have scrapped visa requirements for other African nations. Last year, Kenya abolished the electronic travel authorisation requirement for nine South African countries. Congo is hosting the 2026 Annual Meetings from May 25–29 at the Kintele International Conference Centre, located in a new district 16 kilometres from Brazzaville."
