"Hundreds of Congolese diaspora members and activists marched in Brussels on Monday, accusing the European Union of complicity in violence in eastern DRC and demanding sanctions against Rwanda. Footage shows protesters waving Congolese flags and marching towards the European Parliament, chanting and holding placards. Protesters said they gathered in Brussels to challenge the 'falsification of history' around the conflict and to denounce the suffering of civilians. "We are tired of this falsification of history. These young people have gathered in Brussels today to send a single message: no political parties, no biases - we defend the Congo," said a protester. Others accused Rwanda of backing the M23 movement and said Europe should stop supporting President Paul Kagame's government. "We are here in the European Union today to ask Europe to stop being an accomplice, to stop supporting Paul Kagame's regime, which is committing murder in the Congo. We are calling for sanctions. We want the Rwandan regime to be condemned," said another. Another protester accused EU and US of backing Rwanda while the conflict continued over strategic minerals. "We are being invaded by Rwanda, which is funded by the European Union and the Americans," the demonstrator said, adding that the aim was to seize Congo's land and mineral wealth. The protest came as violence continues in eastern DRC despite a US-brokered ceasefire and an accompanying economic agreement reached in December 2025. Kinshasa repeatedly accused Rwanda of supporting M23, an allegation Kigali denies. On March 2, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on the Rwandan Defence Force and four senior commanders, accusing them of violating the Washington Accords by continuing to support M23 operations, including the capture of the eastern Congolese city of Uvira in December."
