Money for nothing - Syrians hit by surging prices ahead of Eid al-Adha

"Syrians reported surging prices and rock bottom purchasing power ahead of this year's Eid al-Adha on Monday, with footage showing them shopping at the historic Al-Hamidiyah Souq, as well as the Al-Bzouriyah, Al-Amara market, and Al-Midan in Damascus. "Prices are extremely high, and not every family can afford to buy Eid necessities anymore, whether sweets or clothes," said one woman. Some reported shortages of products, while others blamed the exchange rates and even the Iran war and the Strait of Hormuz crisis. “There is no purchasing power - there is neither selling nor buying - and even clothing shops are making barely any sales because of the high prices,” added Radwan Al-Hayek. "People used to visit one another to exchange Eid greetings," Al-Hayek went on. "In the past, social traditions were stronger, such as exchanging visits and invitations, like inviting your sister or your sister’s children. Today, many people are no longer able to do that." The current transitional government took power in December 2024, with Ahmed al-Sharaa appointed interim president, pledging to form 'inclusive government'. Eid al-Adha, the 'Feast of Sacrifice', commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his willingness to sacrifice his son to God - before God provided a ram in his place. It is traditionally marked by the ritual sacrifice of a sheep, goat or cow, with the meat divided between family, friends and those in need."
