Senegal's new chapter - Pres Faye appoints Ahmadou Lo as PM amid promises of administrative shift after Sonko dismissal

"Senegal appointed a new prime minister on Monday, as President Bassirou Diomaye Faye signed a decree naming Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lo - former Secretary-General of the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) - to the post, following the dismissal of Ousmane Sonko on Friday. The announcement was made by government spokesperson Oumar Samba Ba on state television from the Presidential Palace in Dakar. "Mr Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lo is appointed Prime Minister of the Republic of Senegal," Oumar Samba Ba announced, praising the politician's "competence, his in-depth knowledge of the country, his experience of the intricacies of the economy, his commitment, and above all - his loyalty." Lo also made his first remarks after the appointment, vowing a 'change in approach' to ensure 'fidelity to the commitments' of the 'Diomaye President' programme. "I would remind you that all policy directions are guided solely by the 'Senegal 2050' agenda, the vision of which is a sovereign, just and prosperous Senegal, rooted in strong values," stated Lo. "Senegal is at a turning point, which calls for the nation to rally behind this agenda - Senegalese people from near and far [...] all this will be achieved whilst upholding our African commitment and our reputation as a benchmark in Africa for national cohesion and the defence of democracy," he underlined. 65-year-old Lo spent decades at the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) before joining Faye's administration in 2024 as Minister-Secretary General. He was appointed prime minister following Ousmane Sonko's dismissal on Friday, after months of reported tensions between Sonko and President Faye. The move is also part of a broader political reshuffle, with Sonko expected to return to parliament and a new National Assembly president to be elected following El Malick Ndiaye's resignation on Sunday."
