'Everyone thought greatest danger was Cold War… NOW Western elites have lost ALL restraint!' - Russian rep as UNSC debates state of UN charter

"Russia's UN representative Vassily Nebenzia launched a scathing attack on the Western powers - accusing them of losing 'all restraint', expanding NATO into areas like Asia and dealing in double standards - as the UNSC debated the current state of the UN charter on Tuesday. "At one time, it seemed that the greatest danger was the confrontation of irreconcilable ideologies during the Cold War years," he told them. "Today, the disregard for the UN Charter, this cornerstone document, has reached its peak. In the pursuit to maintain their dominant positions in the world, Western elites have lost all restraint in using crude forceful methods to advance their political and economic interests." Nebenzia took aim at Europe in particular, accusing leaders of resorting to 'blackmail and pressure' to "seize lands in the East again, this time under the guise of NATO and European Union expansion." "They rely on bribing elites and colour revolutions. But today the European elite decided to drop the masks and bet on undisguised military force, actively engaging in the crisis in Ukraine, including unprecedented arms supplies," he added. He also slammed the growing militarisation in Germany, and recent nuclear talks with France. Meanwhile, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke of Beijing's own 'Group of Friends of Peace for Ukraine', a global south-backed initiative aimed at resolving the crisis - instead of the European model of sending arms supplies to Kiev. The US side spoke of the Trump administration's 'decisve and significant action' to tackle what it called 'shortcomings' of the UN: "Over the last 16 months, the United States has led efforts to get the UN back to its basic mission of maintaining international peace and security. In practise, that includes streamlining the bureaucracy, eliminating duplication, and ensuring accountability for a more effective UN.""
