'Military aggression would provoke bloodbath' - Parrilla accuses Washington of pushing Cuba towards war

"Cuba's Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, accused Washington of 'aggression' and risking war during his address to the UN Security Council in New York on Monday. "The government of the United States is in a position of undermining international peace and security and International Humanitarian Law with regard to the Republic of Cuba," the diplomat said. This came after the United States Department of Justice formally brought charges against Raul Castro related to the shooting down of two aircraft belonging to the organisation 'Brothers to the Rescue' in February 1996, an incident that left four people dead and triggered a diplomatic crisis between the two countries. Parrilla described the legal proceedings as a political manoeuvre and defended Cuba's actions at the time, claiming that the country had acted in legitimate self-defence. "The filing of criminal charges against the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Army General Raul Castro Ruz, is a morally infamous act, illegally arbitrary through abuse of the jurisdiction of the US courts," the foreign minister declared. He went on to claim that the accusation is intended to generate international support for pressure toward regime change on the island. "It is a politically motivated, fraudulent decision aimed at deceiving US and foreign citizens <...> with the vile purpose of encouraging support for a military adventure against Cuba," he said. Finally, he also warned that a military intervention would have devastating consequences for both Cuba and the United States. "A military aggression would provoke a bloodbath, thousands of Cubans would die defending the homeland <...> and young Americans would also perish," the diplomat stated. In recent weeks, relations between Washington and Havana have deteriorated following new sanctions, the charges against Raul Castro, and continued provocative statements by senior US officials regarding the political and economic situation on the island. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently stated that the United States seeks a new relationship with the Cuban people, distinguishing them from the government in Havana."
