Tolaga Bay incident leaves one person in critical condition in hospital

A person has suffered life-threatening injuries after getting trapped under a vehicle in Tolaga Bay, northeast of Gisborne this morning. Emergency services were called to the incident just before 5.30am. Fire and Emergency central shift manager Murray Dunbar said the accident happened at an engineering yard, but further circumstances were unclear. One person was flown to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition, a Hato Hone St John spokesman said. A senior Tolaga Bay firefighter told the Gisborne Herald a truck and trailer unit loaded with metal had fallen on a man. “He was working on a tyre on the trailer when it fell, pinning him by the chest under the rear axle,” he said. “We used airbags to lift the trailer off him.” A WorkSafe New Zealand spokesperson said WorkSafe was aware of the incident and was making initial inquiries to understand the circumstances and determine if an investigation was required. “... our thoughts are with the person who has been critically injured.” Gisborne Senior Station Officer Bernie Bull said the Tolaga Bay volunteers who tended to the man did really well. “The man’s workmates also did a good job.”
