The US military has carried out fresh strikes on Iran, according to reports. An official, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said a site was targeted that posed a threat to US forces and commercial traffic. The US also intercepted drones being launched from Iran, the official added. Earlier, Iran had said that a return to war was unlikely, while US President Donald Trump hinted that further military action was possible. He told a televised White House cabinet meeting: “Iran is very much intent, they want very much to make a deal. So far they haven’t gotten there. We’re not satisfied with it, but we will be. “Either that or we’ll have to just finish the job.” Iranian media reported that three explosions were heard east of the port city of Bandar Abbas about 1.30am on Thursday (Iranian time), adding that air defences were activated for several minutes and that authorities were following up to determine the origin of the sounds. The US also struck southern Iran on Tuesday, targeting missile launch sites and boats placing mines, which Tehran called a “gross violation” of the tenuous ceasefire in place for nearly seven weeks. There is no suggestion that the latest strikes are an end to a ceasefire between the US and Iran in the region. The Daily Mail quoted an unnamed US official telling Fox News: “Today, US Central Command forces shot down four Iranian one-way attack drones that posed a threat around the Strait of Hormuz. “US forces also struck an Iranian ground control station in Bandar Abbas that was about to launch a fifth drone. These actions were measured, purely defensive, and intended to maintain the ceasefire.” More to come...
