'We’re going to the Gulf of Mexico to see whether our friend Trump gets involved' - Lula jokes about possible US intervention in Petrobras and Pemex projects

"Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva joked on Wednesday in Manaus about the possibility of the United States intervening in energy projects involving the Brazilian semi-public oil company Petrobras and the Mexican state-owned company Pemex. During an event announcing investments by the Petrobras System in Amazonas, Lula highlighted the role of the Brazilian company internationally and recalled a recent conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. “Petrobras is very respected around the world. Look at this: the president of Mexico, my friend Claudia, calls me on the phone and says: President Lula, I need to speak with Petrobras because I want to carry out oil exploration in deep waters in the Gulf of Mexico,” he said. The Brazilian president stated that following that conversation, progress was made on a collaboration proposal between both parties. “So we’re going there, we’re going to form a partnership and head to the Gulf of Mexico to see whether our friend Trump gets involved,” he said. Lula noted that he proposed cooperation to the Mexican president that would allow work at depths greater than 2,500 meters. “Petrobras carrying out exploration in waters how many thousands of meters deep? 2,500 meters, which for many people are deep waters, but for Petrobras are like a pond. It’s shallow water,” he remarked. For her part, President Claudia Sheinbaum reported on Friday that Pemex and Petrobras will sign a memorandum of understanding in June to explore deep and shallow waters in Mexico, highlighting Brazilian technology in the sector as among the “most advanced in the world.”"
