'US empire will not silence us!' - Bolivian coca leader calls for road blockades to protect Evo Morales from arrest

"Wilma Colque, head of the coordinating body of the Six Federations of the Tropic of Cochabamba, called for road blockades on Wednesday to oppose any attempt to arrest former Bolivian president Evo Morales. "We call on all brothers and sisters of the Six Federations of the Tropic of Cochabamba, and the central unions, to carry out road blockades to defend and protect the life of our brother Evo Morales Ayma, always defending against these attacks, not only seeking to detain him, but also seeking to assassinate our brother Evo Morales Ayma," Colque said. Colque accused foreign powers of targeting Morales and called on international media and organisations to pay attention to the situation. "We denounce international organisations through the international press so that this information can be spread. How the American empire is trying to take the lives of authorities who have led social movements. They will not silence us; we will not surrender," she added. The call came amid rising tensions around Morales, who remains one of Bolivia’s most divisive political figures and still draws strong support in the coca-growing region of Cochabamba. A Bolivian court reissued an arrest warrant for Morales in May after he failed to appear at the start of a trial on charges of trafficking a minor. Morales denies the accusations and says the case is politically motivated. His supporters have warned of further unrest if authorities attempt to detain him. The Six Federations of the Tropic of Cochabamba is a powerful coca growers’ union and has long been one of Morales’ main political bases. Its supporters have repeatedly used vigils, strikes and roadblocks to pressure governments and resist legal action against the former president. Bolivia is also facing a political and economic crisis under President Rodrigo Paz Pereira, who took office in November 2025. Protests and blockades have spread across the country over fuel subsidy cuts, rising prices, shortages and demands from some groups for Paz to resign."
