"President Claudia Sheinbaum indicated this Thursday that there is a risk of possible foreign interference in Mexico's electoral processes, and therefore supported the reform approved in the Chamber of Deputies to annul elections when foreign interference is proven. The Mexican president affirmed that national sovereignty must prevail against any attempt at foreign influence, whether in the 2027 federal elections or in other elections in the country, during her morning press conference in Mexico City. "There may be sectors that actually want this to influence the United States elections in November or to influence the Mexican elections in '27 (...) In both cases, the issue of sovereignty is very important," she stated. Sheinbaum also maintained that U.S. political actors have used Mexico as a campaign tool during that country's electoral processes. "When there are elections in the United States, they have tried to use Mexico for the election. We said it once and we'll say it again: we are nobody's punching bag," she asserted. In that vein, he defended the initiative approved by the Chamber of Deputies, stating that all political sectors should support measures to prevent any form of foreign interference in national elections. "All Mexicans should agree with this: that there should be no foreign interference in elections in Mexico," he added. He mentioned that the main task is to define the guidelines for demonstrating when foreign intervention exists. The reform discussed in the Mexican Congress seeks to establish legal mechanisms to invalidate electoral processes when cases of foreign intervention are detected and proven, such as financing for or against a candidate. The elections of June 6, 2027, are considered one of the largest democratic processes in Mexico in recent years, due to the number of positions to be filled. These include 500 federal deputies, 17 state governorships, and more than 2,000 mayoralties and city councils."
