"Hundreds of supporters of the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, or BSW, gathered in Berlin on Thursday for a rally ahead of the city’s 2026 state election campaign. Footage shows people holding signs reading 'Merz must go', 'NATO out, Americans go home and take Fritze with you', and 'Overprivileged politicians, stuffed full, are deciding the fate of those who barely have enough to live on'. BSW founder Sahra Wagenknecht used her speech to criticise German support for Ukraine and questioned the press for its coverage of the deadly Ukrainian strike on a college dormitory. "I am horrified. There has been such a celebratory mood in recent weeks. Oh, now Ukraine is managing to carry out attacks deep inside Russia, against civilian facilities, against oil terminals <…> after all the oil terminals in the Middle East are already burning, now they are burning in Russia too," Wagenknecht said. "Economically, all of this is completely insane, but people were cheering. And now several Ukrainian drones even hit a dormitory, 21 young people die, and the German press celebrates it." Wagenknecht said she feared further escalation and warned that some voices in Russia were demanding a harsher response against the West. "There are alarming voices, and they are growing louder, saying that Russia must no longer tolerate one red line after another being crossed," the BSW leader said. "And honestly, when I hear Mr Merz say that he is not afraid of a war with Russia, then I seriously question that man’s mental judgment. I am afraid of war. I do not want us to end up in a war with a nuclear power," she added. The comments followed a drone strike on a college dormitory in Russian-controlled Starobelsk, in the Luhansk region, which Russian authorities blamed on Ukraine. Russian officials said 21 people were killed and dozens were wounded. Ukraine has denied targeting civilians, saying its forces struck a Russian drone unit in the area. Supporters attending the rally also voiced concerns over the conflict and economic insecurity. "Every second euro is being invested in weapons, exported, and used to support other countries that are fighting wars. So we are a war country and a supporter of most wars worldwide," one said. "The German government is so unpopular. It's the most unpopular government in the world, according to polls. Chancellor Merz is less popular than Trump or Kim Jong-un in North Korea," added another. The rally took place in Berlin’s Schoneberg district as BSW collects signatures to stand in the Berlin state election, scheduled for September 20."
