ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday paid tribute to United Nations peacekeepers serving across the world and reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to global peacekeeping efforts, saying Pakistani troops have rendered unmatched sacrifices in the cause of international peace and security. In his message on the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, the President honoured the courage, professionalism, and dedication of UN peacekeepers working in difficult and dangerous conditions worldwide. He also paid tribute to the 183 Pakistani peacekeepers who embraced martyrdom while serving under the UN flag. President Zardari said Pakistan has remained among the leading troop-contributing countries to United Nations peacekeeping missions for more than six decades. He said over 270,000 Pakistani peacekeepers have served with distinction in 48 UN missions across four continents. He said that Pakistani women peacekeepers are also playing an increasingly important role in UN missions, reflecting Pakistan’s continued commitment to the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter. The President said Pakistan also hosts one of the oldest UN peacekeeping missions, the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP). He said the continued presence of the mission reaffirmed the responsibility of the international community to support a just and lasting resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. Highlighting the role of peacekeepers in conflict-hit regions, President Zardari said UN personnel help protect civilians, support humanitarian assistance, and create conditions that allow hospitals, schools, and basic public services to continue functioning. He said that at a time of growing global uncertainty and conflict, United Nations peacekeeping remains an important instrument for maintaining international peace and security. Reaffirming Pakistan’s support for UN peacekeeping operations, the President expressed solidarity with all peacekeepers serving under the UN flag in pursuit of peace and stability around the world.
